Enhanced Mode…

February 23,2009 9:13 am

We’re still going around and around (in our heads) with this mode for Archon.  We’ve come up with some REALLY cool ideas, so I wanted to share a little bit.  Let me introduce the “ENHANCED” mode concept…and how it came to be.  In our talks with current console publishers we’ve come to realize a straight port with updated visuals wouldn’t be enough by itself to attract the newer generation of player.  So we explored some additional ideas and came up with “ENHANCED MODE”, which will be offered as an option as well as the “CLASSIC MODE”.

In Enhanced Mode, we will be changing the look, play and feel of the game SLIGHTLY to add a bit more depth to the game.  The game will still be 2d, using sprites…still have the same fast, frantic gameplay during Combat, but add things like: Adding secondary attacks and abilities to each piece, More spells for spell casters, Up to 4 players, Engaging environments during combat, Bonus items throughout play and many more enhancements throughout both boards.

We are still working and balancing things out, but those are the major changes that we’re pretty excited about, although I don’t know which ones will make it to the final version after playtesting, or if there will be more added.  Time (and testing) will tell.  Again, this mode is an option besides the Original Classic version (You hardcore Archon dudes, don’t worry.)  I’ll keep you posted as things progress.

Sounds fun in theory, but keep in mind that there has been a horribly mutated Archon-bastard child on the PC called Archon 3d, which failed on so many levels that it is labelled as one of the worst games on Underdogs. One of the main reason it failed was the secondary ability/attack of the units, which ruined what gameflow was remaining after the rather unnavigateable 3d-world.

Are you talking about “Archon Ultra” when you talk about 3D?
Not sure if I could call it one of the worst games, the weakening of several key pieces and the over powered secondary moves where cheap. But it did give me a Archon fix when I needed one, which is just sadly not available anymore. Not having played Archon on so many years makes me miss all versions of the game.

I was just able to recently play it again (Archon Ultra) and it certainly is a lot slower than the original. While it had many new enhancements, the slow gameplay killed it, I think.

I agree it was much too slow, it really lacked the edge of your seat game play of the first. But what I thinking slowed the game down was how big the boards where and how slow your powers moved. I really love the Tactics that the game maps added, power points rechargeing hp and it was much safer to hide behind a hill waiting for your power to recharge than the old tombstones. Not sure if that is what helped remove the old nail biting or not, which I also loved.
